FROM RACEHORSE TO RIDING HORSE

Retraining

So what is the right way to train a horse?
In my opinion there really isn’t one! But there are certain methods that appear to work and particular techniques that I have found to be extremely effective.
Firstly we start off our communication process with groundwork.  This enables the horse to trust, yielding physically, psychologically and emotionally to my requests and decisions without any need for force, whips or spurs.
We then move on to training the horses from a distance.  We do this with lunging, long reining, loose schooling and jumping.  If the horse leads correctly and calmly in the first instance working the horse from a distance just becomes and extension of this.
Once the horse has established confidence and is working calmly and happily it is ready to move on to the next stage of ridden work.
This is where we continue with progressive training at both jumping and dressage.  This creates a well balanced, rounded horse.

“After all performance is important to all of us, whether competitively or not.  After all, who doesn’t want a well behaved, safe and reliable horse that is a pleasure to be around?” Richard Maxwell

Rehoming

At Racehorse Rehoming we consider that one of the most important things that we do is finding each individual horse the right home for life.
It is vital that each horse and owner is matched perfectly for both purpose and temperament.  This is why, when the time comes for the horse to find it’s new family, we strongly encourage that prospective person to visit us regularly spending a lot of time riding and bonding with the horse so that a friendship is made on the horse’s home turf.
Once this has been done and all being well for both horse and rider we then vet the purchasers premises to make sure that their husbandry and facilities are suitable.
All of our horses even when rehomed are kept in contact with on an ongoing and regular basis.

Recuperation or Re-schooling Livery

For those horses that already have a loving home waiting for them or are searching for a loan home we also offer the facility for recuperation livery and also re-schooling livery.
The recuperation livery starts at £300.00 per month for full care of the horse on a daily basis.  This includes, turn out and fetch in or box rest, mucking out, grooming, feeding, administering medicines and changing dressings. The re-schooling livery is offered on a similar basis at £300.00 per month with an extra charge of £50.00 per week for re-schooling.  This may mean bringing the horse back in gradually following an injury or illness or it could mean helping the horse to make that transition from racehorse to riding horse.
